Brittany is a fascinating mix of spectacular coastline and ancient towns and from our Gite much of historic Brittany is within easy reach.
St Malo is
a living museum where you leave your car outside and walk through
cobbled
streets or stroll the ramparts for views of the yacht dotted Atlantic.
It has a sandy beach with rock pools where children can safely paddle.
Just upriver is the medieval town of Dinan with its
13th Century cathedral and quaint half-timbered houses. You can take
a cruise on the Rance estuary from here. Further west lays the Gothic
abbey of Mont
St Michel cut off from the main land
at high tide.
Brittany’s south
coast, the Gulf of Morbihan is a maze of rocky bays and sandy coves. Carnac is
famed for its megalithic remains from the Neolithic period In addition
to 2,792 menhirs, the area is studded with burial places, semicircles
and tumuli.
Quimper, to the west, is famous for its handmade pottery (faience) which has been produced here since the 17th century and a visit to the workshops is not to be missed. Close by is Pont-Aven, a postcard pretty fishing village made famous by Paul Gauguin
Ile de Brehat is on the northern coast, and you will find this beautiful island
something
to remember. About one and a half hours drive away but allow the day.
A short boat trip takes you onto the island where no cars are allowed
and even the police ride bikes. Hire a bike and see the rugged pink
coast, a fantastic day.
